How to Choose the Best Double Stroller

There are a lot of options when it comes to double strollers. To help you select the best one for your family, we spoke with child development expert and mom Katie Billingsley.

Look for a stroller that's relatively easy to push, fold and carry. Look for a model that can hold two infant car seat or a toddler with a riderboard.

Safety

Look for a double-stroller that includes all-terrain wheels as well as a brake that is operated by hand if want to keep the kids safe when walking. These brakes and wheels allow you to navigate paths and dirt without worrying about your children slipping or rolling. The first step to choosing the right double stroller is to know how old your children are and how far apart they are. A majority of double strollers are designed to allow one child seat, but the ones that do come in a variety of configurations so you can select the type of seating that best fits your kids and your lifestyle.

Side-byside doubles are a popular option, and are great for kids of similar ages who want to be social with one another. But some parents say the seats are a little too low and they don't recline to a fully flat position, making it difficult for small children to sit comfortably or reach their snack trays.

Ease of Use

A double stroller is usually an investment that you hope to use for years. When choosing a stroller, you want to ensure that it is simple to operate and clean. The top double strollers have been designed to be user-friendly and include numerous features that are convenient.

All the strollers we tested fold easily and compactly with just one hand. They're also light, making them ideal for travel. A lot of them fit into the majority of trunks and are gate-checked on airplanes. Furthermore, the majority our test subjects found that their strollers folded down to smaller dimensions than their single-seat counterparts and some even came with an adjustable carry strap for easy carrying.

The only negatives of the Joovy Twin Roo are minor and specific to that model. Kerry says that the packaging is smart and fun, however it comes in five boxes that can be a bit heavy to carry around. She also found that Genuis's magnetic buckle was awkward and took a while to master. In the end, however she was extremely pleased with this stroller and would highly recommend it.

Stores

Strollers come in a variety of sizes and shapes, from tandems with side-by-side doubles to tandem (single-file seating) designs, and many allow you to modify your stroller by adding a bassinet or a car seat attachment. Some have even added rider boards for older children. But, they're not all created equal -- some are sleek and easy to use, whereas others are heavy, bulky and difficult to fold or stow.

If you're looking for a lightweight double stroller, look into the Joovy Caboose Ultralight Graphite. It was the lightest option in our tests, weighing close to 23 pounds. It is also easy to fold, yet it has all the features parents require to have a great time out with two kids.

The Vista v2 double from UPPAbaby is another model that our test subjects loved. They were particularly impressed by its sleek design and user-friendly. It can accommodate two infant car seats, a toddler's seat and a bassinet. There are no adapters needed. The rear seat can also be removed to create triple or quad stroller. It has a large storage basket and can be upgraded to include a parent organizer wheel, all-terrain wheels, as well as side storage bags.

Billingsley states that the best double stroller for a toddler is one with various options for customization. This includes a bassinet or seat that can be removed. Toddlers are typically weak in endurance, and strollers with an integrated bassinet can give them a safe space for them to sleep.
